The capital of the department is the bustling city of Nice, situated on the famous Cote d'Azur. Here the rich and famous come to enjoy the sun and car brands make here their commercials for new car models. The name Cote d'Azur literally means “Azure coast”, due to the brilliant azure water. Enjoy the coast with its palm trees and stroll along the promenade with numerous shops and restaurants. Because of its location and climate, the city of Nice is attractive in all seasons. In Nice you will find many beautiful 17th century churches like the Eglise St-François-de Paule and the Église du Jésus but also the Ste-Reparate Cathedral. Les Ponchettes are recommended. This is a row of low white buildings on the seafront promenade with restaurants and galleries. Nice is also famous for the Museum of Henri Matisse, a museum dedicated to the life and work of this famous artist.
Other sites that you can visit from your cottage in Alpes-Maritmes are the seaside resort of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, the picturesque mountain town of Biot, the Cap Ferrat peninsula or the last town before the Italian border, Menton. The bulk of Alpes-Maritimes consists of mountains. To the north lies the Mercantour National Park and on the southern side of this are the valleys of the UpperVar, Tinée and Vésubie, all with beautiful flora and fauna.
