Morbihan is located in southern Brittany and can be characterized by its beautiful landscapes, picturesque villages and ancient well-preserved treasures. For the tourist area, you will need to go to the south coast: the Gulf of Morbihan. A long bay, whith more than 40 islands, each with its own character and peculiarities. Almost all of these islands are inhabited and several ferries allow you to visit these jewels. At low tide it is possible to walk between the Ile de Berder and Ile de Gavrinis and to admire the megalithic monuments Cairn of Gavrinis. Do not miss to visit the Ile aux Moines: the largest and most forested island of the bay, with its old town, its narrow streets and typical fishermen's houses.
In the department of Morbihan you will find the old and charming town of Carnac. This lively town is renowned for its prehistoric monuments. You can admire a large number of dolmens and tumulus and more than 3000 menhirs (standing stones from prehistoric times). It is an impressive sight. In Carnac, you can visit the Prehistory Museum with a large collection of prehistoric objects of great wealth. The Saint-Cornely Church is also an interesting sight.
Enjoy a nice meal at one of the many restaurants or drink a cocktail in one of the lively bars of the city and finally, try your luck at the casino. There are many outdoor sports, such as horse riding, surfing, kiteboarding or climbing in the "Forêt Adrenaline" park. If you want to spend a day at the beach, Carnac plage is the perfect destination. Enjoy a mild climate with sunshine like nowhere else in Brittany.
Vannes is the 2000 years old capital of Morbihan. This beautiful fortified city with its historic downtown has a rich cultural heritage. Stroll between beautiful half-timbered houses and discover the charming marina. Every year in July a festival called "Fêtes Historiques" is organized, that will immerse you in a medieval universe. Do not miss to visit the beautiful Cathedral of Saint Peter and the vast Place des Lices.
We also recommend you visit the beautiful city of Pontivy with its imposing medieval castle of Rohan and its narrow streets lined with old facades and half-timbered houses. Do you want to know what life was like in the Middle Ages? Go to Melrand at about 15 km from Pontivy. This is a reconstructed medieval village, with houses, gardens, an old forge and much more. This is a fun and educational tour especially appealing to children. They will have lots of fun playing in the Labyrinth Corsair, a large natural labyrinth.
Rochefort-en-Terre is a flowered village with a pleasant square and many shops, art galleries and shops of all kinds. The pond of the New Mill is an excellent starting point for a walk through the village, ending with a visit to the castle of Roche-en-Terre.
